What is Social Networking

Web Admin - Wednesday, October 26, 2011
The internet is an essential tool for all Australians, including children. However, while the internet has created substantial benefits for children, it can also expose them to a number of dangers, including illegal and prohibited content. Facebook, MSN, Twitter and My Space are the names of only a handful of sites known as Social Networking that are open for easy use of our children.

Facebook rule no 8. You will not use Facebook if you are under 13.
Unfortunately we cannot be on guard with our children 24 hours a day but we must be vigilant in understanding these sites. Their rules and regulations should be read if you allow your child to use these sites. Most commonly of late is Facebook and there are a number of children at the school that have their own page. Whilst we can’t enforce the monitoring of Facebook at home, we would like you to be aware of the fact that is a site that can be manipulated by predators and that children are an easy and trusting target.

Children tend to openly share their information on their site and as parents we must teach them that what they write on these pages and the photos they display are out there for everyone to view and it may not necessarily be information that should be shared or discussed. Some children add “friends” to their profile that may be referred to them from another friend. This is a dangerous way to allow people to meet them that they do not know and it can create a snowball effect of people/strangers attaching themselves to your children’s pages. Bullying also becomes an issue and is very rife on social networking sites.
