Term 3 Week 9  (Odd  Week)

Dear Parents and Families,

We welcomed spring last Wednesday. It is a reminder that our world is changing and that we need to stop and recognize the wonder and beauty that is all around us. The children have enjoyed some lunch breaks with sun warming them for the first time in months.

Well done and congratulations to all our children and families in Year 3 and Year 4 who led Sunday morning mass this week for Father's Day. It was wonderful to see the choir's enthusiasm and to hear our beautiful readers! I hope all Dads’ were suitably spoilt on Sunday. They deserve it!

Our Year 3 to 6 Athletics day last Friday was a great success. Thanks to Mr. Perry for his organisation of a very smooth running and enjoyable day. Many thanks also to all our parent helpers who each year ensures the success of the day for the children by volunteering time and energy. Final results were as follows:

Year 3 to 6 Athletics Overall Results

1. Dingoes     15.72

2. Bandicoots 15.41

3. Bunyips     15.26

4. Wombats   14.53

Next week it is the turn of our Prep, one and two students to strut their stuff on the Athletics track. On Friday 17th September, on our oval here at school, the students will rotate around 6 different activities which emphasise skills in running, throwing and jumping. We look forward to once again having a large group of parents attend to support these budding young athletes!

The St. Mary's Futsal team plays in the Grand Final tonight at 6:00pm.  Many thanks to the coaches and parents for their support throughout the competition. Good luck to the team.

Many thanks to our P & F Association and parents, in particular Kate Nelson, Liz Girdwood, Lesley Hartshorn, Joe Dorigo and Steve Cameron who ran a hugely successful Student Disco on Friday night. We had over 280 children attend who all danced and sang while enjoying a spectacular laser light show!

A reminder that Enrolments for 2011 are open. I would ask that any family who believes they will not be here at St. Mary's next year to let myself or the Office know as we prepare for discussions on our possible class structures for next year.
Thank you for your consideration.

You can support any football code including soccer, AFL and rugby. Please bring in a 50 cent donation to show your support for the Fight Cancer Foundations national fundraiser.

School Working Bee
Sunday 12th September-  9:00am
Attention all Mums and Dads who love the outdoors and would like to take part in a school Working Bee. Our Term 3 Working Bee takes place this Sunday 12th September from 9:00am onwards. For those who can spare some time and are keen on gardening, painting or handy with a shovel then we would love to see you on Sunday! There will be a morning tea provided for those who wish to admire the good work and share a yarn.

Year 3 Reconciliation
The dates set down for Reconciliation are 7:00pm Wednesday 8th September and  7:45pm Thursday 9th September in St. Mary’s Church. Year 3 parents are invited to bring their child to the Church where a service will take place. After the service parents are invited to bring their child forward for an individual Reconciliation with Father Peter, Father John Monaghan or Father Brendan.

Following Reconciliation families are invited over to the Parish Centre to share in a light supper provided by the Parish.

Reconciliation is an important part of each child’s Sacramental journey. Family support of this Sacrament is greatly appreciated.

Class Lists for 2011
Early next term our classroom teachers will start to look at possible groupings for classes for next year. As part of this process the children will also be asked to nominate 3 to 5 children who they know they can work well with and would like to be considered to be in a room with. Our teachers will use this information coupled with their own observations and beliefs and then group children accordingly. If you have any concerns that are of a serious nature in relation to the placement of your child next year could you please have these in writing to me by the end of this school term? Please understand that this is the only process to go through if you would like this issue addressed properly.

VPSSA Schoolgirls Netball Championships

This Friday 10th September our Grade Six netball team head to Melbourne to compete in the finals of the Victorian Schoolgirls Championships. We are extremely proud of our girls and wish them well on what will be a wonderful experience for them.

Mary MacKillop Mass

The St. Mary’s School Community is invited to attend a celebration of the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop in the gardens of our school on Friday 15th October, 2010 at 12:00pm. This will be a casual dress day and students may come dressed as Mary MacKillop, their favourite Saint or in brown. Families are invited to bring their lunch or to pre-order from our canteen. An invitation to this event will be sent home from school today.

Coles Sports for Schools Program

From the beginning of September, Coles are helping schools get free sports equipment from the beginning of 2011.

How Does the Program Work?

From Thursday 2nd September until Sunday 31st  October 2010 for every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets, Coles Online, Bi- Lo and Pick’n Pay, customers will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point (given at check out). Students collect these vouchers from family, friends and neighbours (even teachers!) and drop them into the voucher collection box, which is already in our front office along with a poster about the program.

St. Mary’s will then drop off our voucher collection box into our local Coles Supermarket.  Our brand new sporting equipment will then be delivered at the start of school in 2011.   This is a wonderful way for our school to receive new sports equipment with little effort. Please support this program if you happen to shop at the above mentioned stores.   Vouchers can be sent in through the baskets or you can put them into the box in the office.

Gymnasium Pavers

With the construction of our gymnasium forging ahead we are starting to plan the landscaping and paths to compliment the completed building. One aspect of this is to lay paving to link the existing school buildings with the gymnasium. As a parent you have an opportunity to “make your mark” by purchasing a named paver. Order forms are available from the school office so if you are interested in participating please complete the form and return with payment to the office by the 17th of September.

Toyota Tour 2010 - Grassroots Footy Tour

The tour date: Tuesday 7th September 3.30pm at Blue Sky car park directly opposite Swan Hill Toyota.

We can confirm the talent as the following: Brian Taylor, Danny Frawley, Mark Ricciuto, Mathew Richardson, Dustin Fletcher, Chris Newman, Mark McVeigh.

Toyota Ambassador Jonathon Brown will be attending all of the clinics on Tuesday 7th September.

Clinics are best aimed at grade 5&6 kids. Parents are welcome.

National Christmas Shoe Box Appeal

Each year our school participates in this worthy cause. These boxes are filled with goodies for children who are caught in the midst of war, famine, natural disasters and extreme poverty. A donation of $8 is also required to be put in the box. If your family would like to take part, please collect your box or boxes from the office. They must be returned by Friday 22nd October.

Lost Property

As the term progresses, the Lost Property Bins get fuller! We endeavour to return the named items to the children, but the majority of items are unnamed. If your child has lost anything please come in and peruse the pile. At the end of term all items will be washed and placed in the second hand clothing pool.

School Fees
Please be reminded that all school fee accounts are due to be paid in full by the end of this term, unless alternative arrangements have been made. If you have any queries or concerns please contact Maree at the school office.

Book Club
The 'Monster Book Club Sale Issue' is due back to school on Monday 13th September.  Please make sure your child's name and classroom is on the order form and that cheques are made payable to Scholastic.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you at the Parent’s and Friends Trivia Night!!

Yours sincerely,

Paul Bissinella
Principal
